The Center for Plain Language is a volunteer, non-profit organisation of plain language professionals. Its members include practitioners, private business owners, researchers, lawyers, educators, government employees, and students. 

Since its founding in 2003, the Center for Plain Language has had one mission: 

To champion clear communication so people and organizations can thrive 

Its vision is to create a culture of clarity for:

Clarity

An international association promoting plain legal language

Clarity is a not-for-profit, worldwide, network of professionals who are committed to promoting plain legal language.

Clarity was founded in the UK in 1983 by a small group of legal professionals.

Our members are people who believe in the benefits of plain legal language. They include judges, lawyers, government officials, scholars and teachers, as well as corporate and NGO representatives.

Clarity’s biannual journal, The Clarity Journal, is a leading source of plain language news and research from across the globe.

 

PLAIN

Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) is the leading international membership organization for plain language.

PLAIN’S vision is a world where every message is clear and accessible. We believe a world with plain communication is a better world, because clear communication promotes equal opportunities and enables everyone to participate fully and meaningfully in society.

  • We are dedicated to helping our members by promoting and supporting the use of plain language
  • We foster an environment that respects diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all

  • We innovate and experiment, always looking for new ways to advance the practice of plain language

Objectives

  • Increase public awareness of plain language as a means of making communications from government, business, industry, and community organizations accessible internally and to a broad audience
  • Help people understand and use the principles of plain language
  • Promote the use of plain language in Canada* and internationally
  • Promote research and development in plain language
  • Promote the interests of plain language specialists
  • Develop standards and practices for plain language
  • Provide services for members, including marketing, networking, conferences, and communications
  • Sponsor an international forum where members and others can share ideas about plain language
  • Collaborate with organizations that have similar objectives
