A note about developing and publishing ISO standards
ISO 24495-1 was developed by plain language experts on Working Group 11 of ISO’s Technical Committee 37. ISO is an independent organization formed by its 172 members, which are national standards bodies throughout the world.
When ISO publishes an international standard, national standards bodies can decide whether to publish it as a standard in their own country in one of three ways:
- Identical: They can adopt it identically as a standard in their own country, which means it can have only insignificant changes from the ISO version.
- Modified: They can adopt a modified version, which means they have made editorial and substantial changes or otherwise localized it.
- Not equivalent: They can publish a version only in part, in which case it will be considered a different standard.
National standards bodies can also simply sell the international version through their own stores without formally adopting it as a national standard.
